🚨BREAKING: Citizens' Gavel Files Lawsuit Against TikTok Over Content Moderation Failures. Following the disturbing increase in accounts incentivizing nudity and other explicit content on TikTok, we have now taken legal action against TikTok for failing to adequately moderate content, thereby enabling the sexual exploitation of young and vulnerable users, especially minors who watch and participate through video livestreams. Last month, our legal team formally wrote to TikTok's U.S. headquarters about the risks its platform—an app with the second-highest number of monthly active users in Nigeria—poses in facilitating technology-enabled sexual and gender-based violence. Although the platform has since taken noticeable action, such as suspending some accounts notorious for these violations, these measures have proved insufficient. We have identified a troubling pattern where suspended accounts create backup accounts and, using more devious strategies, continue to perpetuate these acts for coins, online gifts, clout, and monetary gains, thereby exploiting vulnerable persons. To this end, we are seeking a court order requiring TikTok to implement robust safeguards that will significantly prevent the use of the platform for promoting nudity, explicit content, and, more importantly, the sexual exploitation of minors and vulnerable individuals. As a platform predominantly populated by young adults, TikTok has a responsibility to create a safe and positive space for entertainment. Failing to immediately implement comprehensive moderation policies will not only exacerbate the cycle of exploitation among youth and young adults but also inadvertently normalize harmful behaviors such as nudity, pornography, sexual harassment, rape, and other forms of sexual violence, which the platform claims to strongly prohibit. Moving forward, beyond Nigeria, we hope this will set a global precedent for stricter accountability measures from tech platforms. Citizens' Gavel remains committed to advocating for digital safety and justice for vulnerable persons. #TikTok #TechAccountability #CitizensGavel
