A query was scanning 67M+ unindexed rows just to find missing dates. It kept timing out. Fix: a tiny log table, 1 row per user per day, unique key on (user_id, fetch_date). Backfilled in 21 min. Now the same check reads ~4,500 indexed rows. Store the summary.

The backfill was its own challenge. Cloud SQL Studio cuts queries off at 300 seconds, so I wrote a stored procedure and ran it from Cloud Shell outside peak hours. It took 21 minutes to summarize 67M+ rows into the new table.

Result: the missing-dates check now reads ~4,500 indexed rows instead of scanning 67M+. That’s about 15,000x less data for the same answer. My takeaway: if you keep asking a huge table the same summary question, store the summary. #SQL #DatabaseOptimization #googlecloud
