RT @Geo_papic: This is one of those "thanks tips" obvious conclusions... but my colleague @WeisbergerNoah actually did the hard work of Big N analysis to quantify the risk that "monster IPOs" create for the market. And? Well, chart speaks for itself... 40% for largest IPOs, probably close to 50% for what is coming.

RT @gave_vincent: I caught up on Friday with my friend and business partner Anatole @kaletsky for our weekly Gavekal zoominar. We were supposed to discuss how sustainable the AI capex spending boom would prove to be in the face of rapidly rising corporate bond yields? But given the headlines on France, on the Middle-East and on the growing likelihood of a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine, we struggled to stay on track… I asked the @gavekal editors to remove the locks on the podcast…

RT @johnarnold: In early 2010s, oil prices were high and rising. Excitement around shale oil was high and prospects for refining seemed poor. Investors and bankers pressured integrated oil companies to divest their refinery units bc they were capital-intensive, cyclical, lower-return assets. Marathon (2011) and Conoco (2012) did so, spinning out their refinery units into newly publicly traded companies. Here's total shareholder return since the spin outs: Marathon Oil (producer): +40% Marathon Petroleum (refiner): +3,210% ConocoPhillips (producer): +286% Phillips 66 (refiner): +1,272% Interestingly Conoco bought Marathon Oil in 2024. One conclusion might be that the separation worked, as refining no longer competed with upstream for capital and management was wholly focused on the sector. Another conclusion may be that when investors are clamoring for a company to spin off a chronically underperforming division, if often signals the bottom and that division is the better investment going forward.

RT @Uranium2035: At $BWXT's investor day, CEO Rex Geveden pointed out that between the 1970s and the 1990s the world built about 600 large reactors, and that many are still running today. Nuclear's weakness is well known: building a plant and financing it is enormously expensive. By his numbers, fuel for 1 GW of gas costs about $400M a year. For 1 GW of nuclear, about $60M. He also said gas turbines are getting more expensive, with delivery times of 5 to 6 years. We all know that the huge near-term demand from data centers will be met with natural gas, since it is the fastest way to respond. But in the long run that is unsustainable🧐 His message has a logic to it: nuclear is a high fixed cost, low operating cost asset, and gas is the opposite. For a patient investor the economics tilt toward nuclear, and by his rough estimate, doubling the life of an existing reactor costs about 30 cents on the dollar compared with building a new one. Note: BWXT sells nuclear components, so his thesis is obviously self-interested, but I still find it interesting.

RT @BurggrabenH: Belgium restored nuclear power output Belgium’s two remaining nuclear reactors are back online, restoring 2GW of reliable power after months shut down. Under Bart De Wever, the government has also scrapped the nuclear phase-out law and lifted the ban on new reactors. Concrete action to reverse the damage inflicted by energy-illiterate fools. Germany threw away more than 20GW of nuclear capacity under Merkel, enough to supply roughly 30% of its electricity. Not just IMHO, 8GW can still be recovered at minimum cost and in short order. Merz must halt dismantling and launch a serious programme to restore capacity - asap. Removed equipment can be replaced. Political paralysis is a choice. That’s the difference between De Wever’s pragmatism and Merz’s catastrophic inability to correct past energy mistakes quickly and decisively, even with a highly capable Katherina Reiche as energy minister. Well done, @Bart_DeWever and team. @_FriedrichMerz @BMWE_
