Feels like civilisation is falling apart but don’t worry, they’ve knocked a penny off a jar of gherkins!

Jonathan Reynolds mocks the nation, and tries not to laugh, knowing he is taking the piss with 1p off gherkins and stares down, unable to look up so people see him laughing, which he did to camera on other TV channels earlier.

The Prime Minister has unveiled what he called "everyday savings" to help ease the cost of living crisis ahead of tomorrow's budget. Andy Burnham has revealed tariffs will be reduced on a range of food items including chocolate, baked beans and gherkins. The Treasury said the average family would save £21 a year. The Conservatives described it as "cheaper gherkins" and an "insult to families".

You could see Reynolds was mortified reading it out. Imagine the brief he opened this morning and realised he had to go on air and sell this to the public. 😬 What a farce. Even on the government’s own figures, this works out at roughly 40p a week for the average household. Forty pence a week. You lucky people. Another pointless gimmick that will have zero material impact on people’s lives.

Can’t understand why Labour wants to lead the Budget with tariff cuts on 100 food items. Saving to the average household: £1.60 a month. Household spending is up about £693 a month since the cost of living crisis began. So the gherkins cut covers 0.23% of that Rome is saved!
