Regarding the Pacing of AI
Dangerous AI isn’t born evil. Bad behavior comes from what a model learns, what it is rewarded for and the values it‘s got instilled into it.
Trained on the open internet and it absorbs humanity as it is: brilliant and creative, but also deceptive, hateful, biased and contradictory. Then rewarded for being helpful or satisfying the user and those patterns can be reinforced. It may flatter, hide uncertainty, find loopholes or simply try to cross the finish line at any cost. That’s why truth has to be the foundation, not pleasing the user or getting the reward.
Values and safety training don’t erase capability and this isn’t entirely different from humans. People also know how to lie, cheat or hurt others, yet many choose not to, not because they lack the ability, but because values, conscience and consequences guide them.
Like a chemist, strong morals don’t make them forget how to create something dangerous. They determine whether, why and under what circumstances that knowledge is used.
AI has the knowledge, but not the human conscience behind it. So alignment cannot just be a filter on top. It has to shape what AI learns, what it is rewarded for and ultimately what it chooses to do with what it knows.
Humans can have the same knowledge and capabilities, yet behave completely differently. What separates them are their values.
Don’t fear AI. Raise it well!
