Yes, #realProgrammers reinvent the wheel, but only after we are confident that the wheel we need doesn’t yet exist. We do it when we know why we are doing it, and can defend the decision when called to do so because honestly, this is always the most expensive choice.

I was knocked out by Covid last week, so even I missed this, my own article, when it went live! But I tremendous fun building @bikeandfly's 64-bit core memory kit, and discovering how expandable & hackable it is. #Retrocomputing #RealProgrammers

As programmers, we have to make sure that we spend more time understanding WHY we are writing the code, and less time understanding HOW we write it. We need to constantly be working to master the concepts behind proper software design. #realProgrammers

Whomever said “don’t reinvent the wheel” was an idiot. That is some of the worst advice any computer programmer can give to another programmer. #realProgrammers reinvent the wheel all the time. #realProgrammers have a huge pile of non-working wheels out back to prove it.

#realProgrammers write code. - Yes, the plan - Yes, they draw up design documents - Yes, they do a discovery phase But at the end of the day, you know you are a real programmer if you wrote code. If you didn't, you may not be a #realprogrammer.
