x86 formal verification is coming! The (first?) published machine-checked proof of a security property for the end-to-end execution of a Linux process running an x86 binary statically linked against glibc. And we believe it scales! A joint research project with @zellic_io 🧵👇

The goal of this project was to explore scalable formal verification, where cost per proof goes down significantly the more programs we verify. We found our tooling could verify a second binary with new control flow, with only a few hundred extra lines of additional proof code.

A substantial amount of proof work is also handled by generic automation and metaprogramming. As an example, we compiled `memcmp` using both clang and gcc, giving two different machine code representations of the same function. The same written proof for this specific program works for both versions, with automated machinery allowing the same Lean metaprogram invocation to generate respective proof terms.

It can't be that hard to write a type inference engine for JAI, right? I mean, I know the type system is intentionally simple, and the inference is fairly eager, since the compiler propagates types up the syntax tree, from leaves to roots. i.e. it's unidirectional type inference.

I think it's very exciting, since the language is designed to compile fast, type inference should go *really* fast, without any combinatorial explosion by design. That's what I'm working on right now, and it'll eventually power my editor. I'll share more details on this soon.

The only things I'm not sure how to handle inference for are #placeholder and #insert. But those aren't ordinary code, and I think there must be a way to work around them. I don't want to query the metaprogram for those, though, that'd be nowhere near fast enough for my purposes.
